Moving to College
Looking forward to starting or returning to college? Don't let moving dampen your enthusiasm. Here are some extra tips to make moving easy:
- Select the proper truck size by using the free Penske Moving Guide. Call us and we'll help you calculate - room by room - the truck size, packing equipment and moving accessories (such as boxes and furniture pads) that will meet your needs. Or, utilize our Truck Wizard to calculate the truck size you need.
- Find fellow students to share costs and take turns with the driving on long trips. Helping each other will also speed up the loading and unloading process.
- Penske provides road service 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Keep our contact information handy throughout the move.
- Since most college's semesters start and end at the same time of year, you should reserve your truck and moving supplies as soon as possible to assure availability. Pick up your supplies in advance to avoid a last-minute packing frenzy.
- Pack stereo equipment, TVs and computers in original cartons, and use packing paper or bubble wrap.
- Be sure to bend your knees and lift with your legs, not your back. Don't overload yourself when you load or unload the truck.
- Reinforce the bottom of all boxes with extra tape to prevent them from giving out.
- Put the heaviest items on the truck first. If there are stairs at your destination, unload enough items to allow you to move the heaviest items first, before you get tired.
- Pick up your rental truck the day or evening before you move to familiarize yourself and to save time on moving day. If you can, load the truck the day before as well.
